Nancy Pemberton
ACLU-NC Board Chair

Nancy Pemberton is the Chair of the ACLU-NC’s Board of Directors, her second term at the helm. She has been involved with the organization since first joining the board in 1979. Over more than three decades of service, Nancy has been Treasurer and Vice Chair, and is known internally for her extensive, detailed knowledge of the ACLU-NC’s finances. Outside the ACLU, Nancy is the founder and principal of the firm Pemberton and Associates, which specializes in investigations and litigation in capital cases. Pemberton headed the ACLU-NC’s anti-death penalty committee in the early 1990’s as California prepared for its first execution since the reinstatement of the death penalty, and then became president of Death Penalty Focus in 1992, an abolitionist organization founded in 1990 with the critical support of former longtime ACLU-NC Executive Director Dorothy Ehrlich and others. In addition, Nancy is a founding board member of the Institute for International Criminal Investigations, which trains and deploys professionals to investigate criminal violations of international humanitarian law.
