Legal Department

Our Legal Program

The American Civil Liberties Union of Northern California (ACLU-NC) engages in civil liberties and civil rights impact litigation. We raise constitutional and civil rights claims in state and federal court, at trial and appellate levels, through direct representation and the filing of amicus briefs.

The Legal Department also engages in advocacy on a broad range of issues, by conducting legislative work, publishing reports, and speaking to the public and the press.

Below find information on cases that figure prominently in our current work and in the history of the ACLU-NC.
