The San Jose office works closely with community and civil rights organizations, elected officials, and policy makers to protect and promote civil liberties in the region and ensure that the Bill of Rights becomes a reality for all. We are also the home of the ACLU of Northern California's Technology and Civil Liberties Program, which works on issues involving the intersection of privacy, free speech, and new technology.
Support Open Records at SJPD!
Law enforcement agencies depend on public trust to do their jobs effectively. Without community support, a police department can’t carry out its mission of maintaining public safety. Unfortunately, the San Jose Police Department is undermining this trust because it isn’t open with the public. SJPD continues to refuse public requests for copies of police records such as use-of-force and incident reports.

Los Altos Community Reverses Ban on Gay Proclamations
The Los Altos City Council has rescinded a ban on city proclamations having anything to do with sexual orientation. The city council passed the original ban in February, after the Los Altos High School Gay Straight Alliance asked the council to proclaim a Los Altos Gay Pride Day. Over 50 local business owners petitioned the council to end the “embarrassing” rule, and students and other concerned residents organized to oppose the ban, aided by ACLU support. Members of the Los Altos High School Gay Straight Alliance played a key role.

San Jose's New Taser Policy
After 18 months without a policy, the San Jose Police Department finally adopted guidelines for how Taser stun guns can be used. Though flawed, the guidelines are an important step toward regulating these potentially lethal weapons.
