I have been a social and environmental activist all my adult life. My involvement has been at the grassroots level, through student, anti-war, environmental, human service, neighborhood and labor organizing. I have also worked in the Santa Cruz City government where I am currently a fifth-term Councilmember and have been Mayor four times. I became an ACLU local Board Member because none of my other work would even be possible if we lose our civil liberties. The rights to free speech, association, due process, racial and gender equality, among other protections provided by the U.S. Constitution have probably never been under more serious threat than today and that's why, I am eager to lend my active support to the ACLU in its struggle to protect our civil liberties.

- Mike Rotkin, Activist

"During my tenure at the ACLU, I got to work with young people who may not have heard about the ACLU previously, but once they understood what we were all about, they were so motivated to fight for their own rights and for the rights of others."
Nancy Otto, ACLU-NC Activist
