Civil Rights Groups Urge San Francisco Police Commission to Ban “Consent Searches” by SF Police

For Immediate Release: January 8, 2003

WHAT: As part of the hearings on racial profiling, the San Francisco Police Commission is holding a hearing on the practice of “consent searches.” A consent search is when the police officers ask permission to search in individual in the absence of probable cause. Civil Rights and community groups say that the searches are discriminatory. In San Francisco, data collected by the police shows African Americans are twice as likely to be searched as whites. The hearings are the result of community pressure from a wide-array of groups concerned about racial profiling.
