  • In 2009, less than 60% of middle and high school students reported feeling safe at school.

  • In 2009, 33% of 7th graders experienced hate-crime motivated harassment or bullying at least once.

  • In 2010, 42% of students who identify as lesbian, gay or bisexual (LGB) and 62% who identify as transgender report being harassed at least once based on gender non-conformity.

  • For 2006 to 2007, English language learners comprised only 15% of the student population, but they accounted for 30% of the dropout rate.

  • In terms of race and ethnicity, Blacks, Hispanics and Native Americans have the highest dropout rates, and black male dropouts experience a 60% probability of incarceration.

  • For 2005 to 2006, only about two-thirds of the student population graduated on time.

  • More than 40% of California’s dropouts are English learners and disabled students.

  • In 2006, the suspension rate of Black elementary and secondary students was over double the rate of suspensions for White, Hispanic, or Asian students. Also, even though Black students comprised only 8% of the general student population, they accounted for 19% of suspensions.
