Join the Lawyers Council

As lawyers, you have a unique understanding of the significance of the U.S. Constitution in America's history and civic life.  Today, as we face a growing number of challenges to our freedoms, you appreciate more than ever the importance of preserving the freedoms guaranteed by the Bill of Rights. 

The American Civil Liberties Union is the nation’s largest public-interest law firm and the country's leading organization protecting civil liberties.  We employ legal, policy, community organizing, and communication strategies to ensure that we are all protected by our Bill of Rights.

By joining the Lawyers Council, members of the northern California legal community make the impact litigation and regional public education programs and community-based campaigns undertaken by the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Northern California (ACLU-NC Foundation) possible.

Each year, hundreds of lawyers in the academic, non-profit and business communities join or renew their membership in the Lawyers Council.  Representing a broad cross-section of firms and practices, they may hold differing views on civil liberties issues yet share a common goal - to build a just society by preserving the fundamental freedoms of the Bill of Rights.

Lawyers Council Contributions

Through individual and corporate contributions the Lawyers Council provides major financial support to the ACLU-NC Foundation.  Members donate a minimum gift of $100 renewable annually to help fund our programs.  Additionally, members serve in an advisory capacity to the Legal and Legislative Committees and are periodically invited to attend board meetings, press conferences, and special events.

In recognition of their generosity, members of the Lawyers Council receive:

• An opportunity to review the Legal Docket and Assessment of the Legal Program of the ACLU of Northern California.
• Special briefing papers on a wide range of civil liberties topics, including the ACLU’s annual Analysis of the U.S. Supreme Court term.
• A public acknowledgement in the ACLU Annual Report and selected legal community periodicals such as the Daily Journal and the Recorder.
• Contributors of $1,000 and above also become members of the ACLU Freedom Circle, and are invited to attend the annual Benefactors Dinner.
