Foundation is the arm of the ACLU that conducts our litigation, education and
communication efforts. Gifts to the ACLU Foundation are tax-deductible to the
donor, to the extent permissible by law.

Membership dues for supporters who "join" and become card-carrying members of the ACLU are gifts to the American Civil Liberties Union. These dues and other gifts are not tax deductible. This is because the American Civil Liberties Union conducts legislative advocacy and lobbying. Many supporters choose to make their larger tax-deductible gifts to the ACLU Foundation and also make smaller gifts to the American Civil Liberties Union in order to maintain their 'card-carrying' membership status with the ACLU.

When you join the ACLU, you automatically become a member of the National ACLU, the ACLU of Northern California, (ACLU-NC, called the "affiliate") and your local geographic chapter where one exists. Click here to find out if you have a local chapter. It does not matter if you joined on the website or in response to a letter from the National or the Northern California ACLU - you still belong to both.
