The ACLU of Northern California (ACLU NorCal) seeks a fellow to join the Gender, Sexuality and Reproductive Justice (GSRJ) Team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a team devoted to ensuring Californians’ bodily autonomy and ending oppression based on gender and sexual orientation. The fellow will pursue and help develop policy advocacy, impact litigation, legislative advocacy, organizing, and communications campaigns under the supervision of the GSRJ Program Director. This position can be based in ACLU NorCal’s San Francisco office.
ACLU NorCal’s GSRJ Team works toward a California that is free of discrimination based on gender and sexual orientation and that respects, values and supports all Californians’ bodily autonomy and right to have children, not have children and parent the children we have with dignity. We ground our work in racial justice values and an understanding of intersectionality. Current priority areas include work at the intersection of criminal justice, including the decriminalization of sex work and the criminalization of pregnancy; advancing paid sick and family leave; protecting the rights of transgender people, particularly Black trans women; addressing government programs within the family regulation system that lead to family separation and surveillance for low-income families of color; promoting measures to eliminate racial inequities in birth outcomes and reproductive health access; ensuring comprehensive, LGBTQ-inclusive sex education; and challenging discriminatory religious restrictions on health care.
ACLU NorCal takes an Integrated Advocacy approach to the work of advancing civil rights and civil liberties in our region and across the state, meaning we deploy multi-pronged strategies that include impact litigation, policy advocacy, legislative advocacy, organizing, and communications.
The GSRJ Team Fellow will help to develop and implement multi-modal, integrated advocacy strategies to advance the GSRJ Team’s strategic plans and to protect and defend civil rights and civil liberties for all Californians. You will spend your time directly engaging in substantive policy advocacy, legal advocacy, and litigation projects. This work may include developing grassroots advocacy campaigns to effect policy changes at the local and regional levels; leading public education efforts to advance programmatic priorities; conducting outreach to and advocating in coalition with our community partners; and facilitating internal and external trainings and leadership development in key issue areas. Your work may also focus on legal advocacy and litigation, including engaging in the investigation, development and initiation of high-impact cases; working up fact and expert discovery; conducting legal research and writing.

The ACLU of Northern California is an affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union a nationwide, non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to the defense and expansion of civil liberties and civil rights. Duties & Responsibilities
You are an advocate with interest or experience in gender justice, advocacy for LGBTQ people or reproductive justice. You have a strong commitment to racial and social justice and have a demonstrated history of applying an intersectional lens to your work. Working under the supervision of the GSRJ Director and with other ACLU staff, the GSRJ Team Fellow will participate in a range of legal and policy advocacy activities.
This will include:
- Litigation, including all aspects of legal research and writing
- Legislative, agency & political process lawyering and advocacy, including researching and drafting letters, as well as drafting, evaluating, and working to advance key legislation and administrative policies
- Issuing and analyzing Public Record Act requests
- Civic engagement & public education, including public speaking, work on strategic communications, as well as supporting leadership development and capacity building opportunities for directly impacted community partners
- Building organizational partnerships and participating in coalitions
- J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
- Experience with and commitment to gender justice, advocacy for LGBTQ people or reproductive justice
- Strong commitment to racial justice and experience with intersectional advocacy
- Excellent legal research skills
- Excellent writing and analytical skills
- Experience working directly or in coalition with impacted communities, and grassroots and community-based organizations
- Understanding of advocacy in non-litigation as well as litigation context
- High degree of self-motivation and creative thinking, combined with ability to work well in teams
- Excellent oral communication skills
