The Opportunity

The ACLU of Northern California (ACLU NorCal) seeks an Organizing Data Program Associate for the San Francisco, Sacramento, or Fresno offices.  This position will be directly responsible for coordinating the Organizing Department’s data, digital outreach tools, and CRMs for the purpose of strategically building our base and winning campaigns. The position works closely with Organizing Department staff and volunteers to design and support campaigns for texting or phone banking, provide data analysis to support strategy and goal setting, and manage communications to the volunteer database. The ideal candidate has experience both working with volunteers and managing data and approaches their work through the lens of racial justice, equity, and building power.

The Approach

Our work is guided by the principles of freedom, equality, and justice enumerated in the Constitution. However, we know that because of historic and systemic racism and other forms of oppression, these principles are not equitably applied to all. In an ideal world, everyone would have equal access to justice and equal protection under the law. Unfortunately, neither our world nor our country is ideal. Our work involves hard subject matters that can be emotionally draining for some people. The Position 

You are an organizer at heart, with a love for clean data, data-analysis, and strategic use of data to build power and win campaigns. You enjoy developing volunteer leaders and working collaboratively with teams of staff. You are comfortable using many different digital tools, including CRMs, voter files, complex functions in Excel or Google Sheets, HTML, peer-to-peer texting or phone systems, mass e-mail, and other tools to progressively communicate with voters, connect with volunteers, and win grassroots campaigns. You are excited to dive into a new role, use these tools on a daily basis, and build the structures and systems the Organizing Department needs to achieve our goals and use data-driven strategies.

About the Organization

The ACLU of Northern California is an affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, a nationwide, non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to the defense and expansion of civil liberties and civil rights. The ACLU of Northern California (ACLU NorCal) is comprised of two distinct corporations, the ACLU Foundation of Northern California (the “Foundation”, a 501c3) and the ACLU of Northern California (the “Union”, a 501c4). The incumbent is a joint employee of both corporations. For most of the last century, ACLU Nor Cal has been part of many of the most major – and sometimes controversial – struggles for civil liberties and civil rights in our state.

Duties & Responsibilities

Maintain and Track All Organizing Department Data

  • Build and maintain volunteer database, including collecting and tracking demographic data, growth of list, and how people are participating in Organizing programs and campaigns
  • Upload clean data from programs and events, and export useful data for organizing
  • Track and target volunteer prospects in the voter file through PDI
  • Integrate various databases from NorCal and National ACLU
  • Track relationships with decision-makers and government at local level
  • Ensure compliance with ACLU data and privacy practices and policies.

Manage Text and Phone Bank Volunteer Program

  • Create the text/phone bank calendar and topics based on the needs of department campaigns/programs and legislative priorities
  • Lead some text/phone banks (including on evening and weekends)
  • Build targeted voter lists for text or phone banks in PDI and utilize a progressive strategy to build engagement over time, especially amongst BIPOC or directly impacted people
  • Create scripts and trainings, ensure text banks are adequately staffed, and track volunteer participation
  • Recruit and train cohort of volunteer leaders to help support during text or phone banks and clean up data afterwards
  • In election years, build targeted lists for voter outreach based on data from previous work and hold overall year around strategy for targeting voters that impacts election outcomes. This may include managing lists and data for door-to-door canvassing or direct mail.
  • Coordinate with vendors such as mail houses and printers as needed

Coordinate Online Outreach and Data for Campaigns and Programs

  • Provide strategic guidance to organizers and chapters on best use of data and tools for campaigns, especially to build base of BIPOC and/or directly impacted people
  • Work with Organizers and volunteer chapters to send e-mails to targeted lists, tracking email engagement and open rates, testing for most effective messages, and developing best practices
  • Build forms and petitions and download data as needed
  • Work closely with Communications Department on social media, online list-building strategies, and use of national email system
  • Keep department and chapter webpages up to date with opportunities for action and compelling stories that get people involved

Data Analysis

  • Analyze data to identify trends, opportunities, and problems so that Organizers and chapters can organize at peak effectiveness and drive strong and winning campaigns
  • Work closely with department leadership to evaluate progress and set goals about our base and how volunteers are engaging
  • Analyze, summarize, and present data to decision-makers in a way that is easily understandable by those without technical expertise

Qualifications

Education / Experience:

  • Bachelor’s in a social science or related field or related certification program such as data management/analysis or computer science.  Education can be substituted with comparable work experience. 
  • At least 3-5 years of experience managing non-profit or campaign data and working with volunteers, with preference for experience with data for power building and base building to win campaigns.

Required Technical Skills:

  • Intermediate proficiency in databases and CRM management, with preference for experience using Civi CRM (or similar program)
  • Intermediate proficiency in voter file management, with preference for experience using PDI
  • Intermediate proficiency in using voter contact tools, with preference for ThruText (or similar tool)
  • Intermediate proficiency using complex excel functions for data analysis and designing reports
  • Experience in html and building and testing e-mails and e-mail messages for effectiveness
  • Standard ability with Microsoft Suite and Gsuite tools and willingness to learn new online tools

Required Skills / Competencies:

  • Ability to give actionable constructive or corrective feedback to volunteer leaders about work product and equity and inclusion practices
  • Ability to facilitate text or phone banks and other organizing spaces that enable people with different backgrounds, knowledge, and experience to learn and take action
  • Demonstrate sound strategic judgment when escalating campaign tactics
  • Utilizes equity and inclusion choice points to manage data and data practices in a way that is mindful of race and identity, how inequity does and does not show up in traditional data and makes choices to mitigate harms
  • Extremely strong project and time management skills and ability to set and meet deadlines, including demonstrated capacity to manage and prioritize competing projects and achieve ambitious goals that align with department and campaign goals.
  • Commitment to the mission and values of the ACLU and the organizing team and an understanding of structural, institutional, and interpersonal racism
  • Follows all department and organizational data management, privacy, financial, and other protocols and policies
  • Demonstrates emotional intelligence and works well with others by seeking to understand their experiences and perspectives
  • Available for weekend and evening responsibilities

Total Compensation

We are committed to creating and maintaining a diverse workforce through equity initiatives, which includes equitable pay practices. Competitive compensation is commensurate with experience. Starting salary range for this position is $74,132 – $86,487 Annually.
