The ACLU of Northern California (ACLU-NC) seeks a Central Valley Regional Organizer to work in close collaboration with colleagues within and outside of the ACLU to implement effective integrated advocacy campaigns that engage, develop, and mobilize ACLU members and supporters and other activists and community members throughout the Central Valley.

The Organizing and Program Associate/Central Valley Regional Organizer will implement our organizing, mobilization, and civic and community engagement work in the Central Valley. As a key member of the Organizing team, they will build and mobilize the ACLUNC’s base in the region in order to increase the ACLUNC’s political power to influence and hold decision-makers accountable. The Organizer will implement programs that increase the ability of impacted communities to make informed decisions about how to exercise their rights. They will partner with legal and policy staff in the ACLUNC’s Sacramento, Fresno, and San Francisco offices and other ACLU of California offices in order to leverage the ACLU base to further critical policy priorities.

The ACLU of Northern California is an affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union a nationwide, non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to the defense and expansion of civil liberties and civil rights. The ACLU of Northern California (ACLU NorCal) is comprised of two distinct corporations, the ACLU Foundation of Northern California (501c3) and the ACLU of Northern California (501c4). The incumbent is a joint employee of both corporations. For most of the last century, it has been at the heart of many of the most major – and sometimes controversial – struggles for civil liberties and civil rights in our state. Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage regular phone banks, text banks, and canvassing efforts on priority policy matters and civic engagement campaigns, including recruiting volunteers, securing space, developing and providing training, and managing logistics
- Host community meetings and other general public education and/or mobilization opportunities to connect local activists with relevant ACLU work
Volunteer and Leadership Development:
- Recruit, develop, and support volunteers and community members throughout the region
- Train volunteers to meet with local, state, and federal elected officials throughout the region and to represent the ACLUNC at community meetings, town halls, resource fairs, etc.
- Support the leadership development of local chapter board members by providing training and strategic guidance
- Participate in coalitions including attending meetings and conference calls when relevant to assigned campaign work
- Build and maintain relationships with staff of elected officials, local partner organizations, and community leaders
- Proactively problem-solve and negotiate conflicts with partner organizations diplomatically
- Represent the ACLU publicly through public speaking and serve as a media spokesperson as needed
- Collaborate with Central Valley legal/policy staff to help ensure organizing and community engagement strategies are effectively integrated into local efforts when needed
Required Skills / Competencies:
- Understanding of unique issues facing the Central Valley and passionate desire to make change in this region;
- Extremely strong project and time management skills, including demonstrated capacity to manage and prioritize competing projects;
- Ability to adapt to changing circumstances
- Ability to plan and implement community meetings, phone banks, and other events from start to finish including developing a timeline and materials and following up with participants with only initial input from supervisor and consultation with supervisor when problems arise
- High level of organization, attention to detail, and follow-through, as well as demonstrated experience and effectiveness in coordinating and organizing logistics, meetings, events, and trainings;
- Excellent judgment, dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a high level of confidentiality about campaign strategy and other intellectual property and legal and personnel matters;
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including excellent interpersonal skills and strong public speaking skills;
- Demonstrated success in building and maintaining relationships with people from a variety of backgrounds;
- Solution-oriented approach, including the ability to work independently and on a team, and demonstrated willingness to take initiative while juggling several priorities all with personal enthusiasm, optimism, and a sense of humor; and,
- CA Driver’s License and ability to travel throughout the Central Valley, Sacramento, the Bay Area, and occasionally elsewhere in California and out of state
Preferred Skills / Competencies:
- Spanish fluency; and/or
- Knowledge and experience using voter files for advocacy/electoral campaigns.
- Adept at computer programs including Microsoft Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, other Office programs, and GSuite programs, especially Google Sheets;
Preferred Education / Experience:
- Three to five years of professional organizing, policy advocacy, legislative, or campaign experience;
Competitive compensation is commensurate with experience. Excellent benefits include four weeks paid vacation in addition to 14 office holidays; medical, vision and dental insurance for staff members, their dependents and spouse or domestic partner; life and long-term disability insurance; and, 401(k) plan with employer match. Starting salary range is $66,921.98 to $74,753.28 annually.
