Big Brother on the Big Screen- Fact/Fiction? Saturday Night, August 6 , 6 p.m.

You are cordially invited to join Nicole Ozer, Tech and Civil Liberties Policy Director at the ACLU of Northern California, at the movies on Saturday night to take a closer look at how current technology has caught up with the spy gadgets dreamed up for Hollywood flicks.

When movies like Brazil and Gattaca were produced, they were largely regarded as big brother fables or futuristic, science fiction tales. However, as technology has advanced and legal and procedural safeguards for civil liberties have been diminished, some of the depictions have even outpaced our current reality. And what about newer films like Dark Knight and Bourne- are its depictions of surveillance closer to technological and legal fact or fiction?

We are going to go on a tour of the movies and talk about what is technologically possible, what is legal, and discuss what should be the balance between surveillance and individual liberty. Movie snacks and jaunty tin foil hats will be provided!
