Chauncee Smith, Racial Justice Advocate with the ACLU of California Center for Advocacy & Policy was invited by the City of Oakland's Citizens' Police Review Board (CPRB) to attend an important community event in March.

Citizens' Police Review Boards help to improve communication between police departments and the community. They increase police accountability and community trust, and offer a police misconduct complaint process that is free from bias and informed of actual law enforcement practice.

Oakland's CPRB hopes to identify what goals and objectives community members want included in its Strategic Plan. Community input is much needed in order to make police reform a reality in Oakland.

This event is free and open to the public - all residents of Oakland are encouraged to join the conversation.

Location:
Acts Full Gospel Church
1034 66th Avenue
Oakland, CA

Agenda

  • Presentation on the CPRB and the strategic planning process
  • Community perception of CPRB
  • Community input on future of CPRB

Police officers across the nation often engage in aggressive, selective law enforcement unfairly in communities of color. This needs to stop immediately. The ACLU seeks to help build community-police partnerships with the shared goals of equality, fairness, dignity, and public safety to prevent future tragedies from happening again.
