People Power ACLU

We invite all San Francisco residents to participate in this exciting opportunity to create meaningful, on-the-ground change. The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has upcoming legislation (File #170873) that would prohibit City and County participation in Urban Shield and other programs that promote the militarization of law enforcement.

Join the ACLU, People Power, the Stop Urban Shield Coalition at this online training on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at 7 p.m. to learn more!

Registration is required in advance: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/c8540c2e5badeff6d746f627e8486654

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.

Background on Urban Shield

Urban Shield is an annual trade show, SWAT team competition, and emergency response training convened by the Alameda County Sheriff's Department and funded by the Department of Homeland Security via the Urban Areas Security Initiative (UASI). San Francisco is the fiscal agent for UASI, and so a major player in Urban Shield.

In its focus on militarized tactics and weaponry, Urban Shield promotes the wrong kind of training for law enforcement: training that leads to excessive force and racial profiling.

And just last month, the Trump Administration rolled back the limitations on police military equipment by rescinding Obama’s Executive Order 13688, putting things like grenade launchers back in the hands of local police. It is more important than ever that we stop the use of war weapons and tactics in the policing of California’s communities.
