Action: Rein In Police Militarization In California!
For years now, California police have been quietly stockpiling wartime arsenals. Police departments — even school police — throughout California have acquired millions of dollars’ worth in grenade launchers, armored tanks, and other military equipment. This threatens community safety and forces tax payers to foot the bill for the astronomical costs of upkeep and maintenance for these weapons.
The California Senate will consider a bill that would require California law enforcement agencies to get permission from local governments before getting or deploying military equipment in our communities. Assemblymembers Todd Gloria (D-San Diego) and David Chiu (D-San Francisco) introduced AB 3131 to help communities rein in the militarization of local law enforcement.
Grenade launchers, tanks, and assault weapons have no place in our neighborhoods or our schools. But the federal government has been funneling them to local law enforcement with no oversight, and the consequences have been devastating — particularly for communities of color. A 2014 study by the ACLU found that people of color were more likely to be impacted by paramilitary policing than white people. This is unacceptable.
Act now. Together, we can make sure that police stop treating our neighborhoods like war zones and our residents like enemy combatants.
