Man on cell phone

This Thursday, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) will decide an important issue - whether to initiate a rulemaking to update privacy protections for the modern smartphone age. It’s been 28 years, yes almost three decades, since the Commission drafted the current telecom privacy rules. And it’s clear that a lot has changed since the mid-1980s when cell phones were the size of bricks and nobody had ever heard of an app.

Our privacy friends at CFC, PRC and TURN submitted the petition to spark this effort and the ACLU of California and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have just sent a joint letter urging CPUC Commissioners to vote to make this happen. But some on the Commission think it is okay for our privacy protections to still be stuck in the digital dark ages. So, it’s time for the Commissioners to hear from all of us loud and clear.

Take action today and make sure all of the Commissioners know that you expect them to stand up for your cell phone privacy and to vote yes on the rulemaking this Thursday.
