Crime & Punishment in America: The Case for Redeeming Redemption

Anthony Romero, Executive Director of the American Civil Liberties Union, will be this year’s featured speaker at the Mario Savio Memorial Lecture: “Crime and Punishment in America: The Case for Redeeming Redemption.” Romero is the ACLU’s sixth executive director, and the first Latino and openly gay man to serve in that capacity.

The Mario Savio Memorial Lecture and Young Activist Award are presented annually to honor the memory of Mraio Savio (1942-1996), a spokesperson for Berkeley's Free Speech Movement of 1964, and the spirit of moral courage and vision which he and countless other activists of his generation exemplified; to promote the ideas and values he struggled to advance throughout his life; and to recognize and encourage young activists striving to build a more humane and just society.
