Searching for reproductive care under police surveillance

Privacy threats should never stand in the way of our ability make choices about our bodies. But since the repeal of Roe, we have seen anti-abortion states use digital data to prosecute people for having abortions or helping others obtain reproductive and gender-affirming care.

In California, police can circumvent privacy protections around sensitive data by seeking "reverse demands." A reverse demand seeks the identity of all the people who were present at a particular location or who searched for a particular keyword. These demands, already used to target protestors, can be used to conduct broad expeditions for those who are seeking needed healthcare.

The only way to ensure California is a refuge for people seeking or providing abortions or gender-affirming care is to take these reverse demands off the table.

Take action now to protect reproductive rights and healthcare for all. Urge your California lawmakers to support Assembly Bill 793.
