On March 1, the ACLU Foundation of Northern California representing the YWCA Silicon Valley filed a motion to intervene in County of Santa Clara v. Trump, a lawsuit challenging President Trump’s executive order threatening to withhold federal funding from so-called “sanctuary cities.”

The motion argues that the executive order is an unconstitutional attempt to punish cities, counties and states that decline to become full-fledged agents of federal immigration enforcement. By threatening grants to nonprofits such as YWCA Silicon Valley, the order jeopardizes services that are critical to the health and safety of residents.

YWCA Silicon Valley depends on the funding to deliver critically important services to many of the most vulnerable women in Santa Clara County. Victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking depend on the services provided by YWCA Silicon Valley to escape life-threatening conditions and to achieve independence and safety.
