Lisa Hathaway (she/her)

Legal-Policy Department Managing Attorney

Lisa Hathaway is the Legal-Policy Department Managing Attorney at the ACLU Foundation of Northern California. In this capacity, Lisa provides managerial and operational support for the department, including maintaining litigation and policy practice infrastructure, overseeing department operations, leading the internship and fellowship programs, and supervising the legal and policy support team.

Prior to joining the ACLU of NorCal, Lisa worked with the Arizona Democrats’ Voter Protection team as director of legal observation. In this role, Lisa managed the organization’s volunteer legal team, leading efforts to train and credential hundreds of attorneys to serve as poll monitors in the run-up to the mid-term election.  Lisa then deployed these attorneys to precincts across the state, where they identified, recorded, and reacted to possible voter suppression efforts.

Before that, Lisa was an associate at the law firms of Jones Day and Shearman & Sterling. She litigated both civil and criminal cases, with a focus on litigating securities fraud actions, derivative actions, and merger and acquisition cases. She represented multinational entities and private companies across a range of industries in state and federal courts. Lisa also maintained an active pro bono practice,  serving as a member of a team that successfully litigated for a federal consent decree to ensure prisoner safety at Orleans Parish Prison. Lisa also placed great emphasis on civic engagement while at these firms, involving them in San Francisco’s high school mock trial program, a diversity program sponsored by the Bar Association.

Lisa graduated from UCLA with a major in political science and attended UC Hastings College of the Law, where she was executive managing editor of the Hastings Law Journal.

In her spare time, Lisa enjoys discovering new podcasts, politics, and traveling.
